18 months of Monster pics
Since November 2010 I’ve been designing the trading cards and magazine for Doctor Who: Monster Invasion, which has been crazy fun. I’ve also been doing some illustrations for the mags, pitching different Doctor Who monsters against each other in totally extreme situations. It’s been a huge learning experience, doing them in 4-6 hour coffee fuelled sessions in the office, but it’s been immensely helpful, and I feel like I’ve finally made progress with my technique.
I was never a cartoonist as such, I’ve dabbled in comics here and there, and frankly I don’t think I appreciated how difficult the skill was. I have the utmost respect for people who do it well, and I’m especially fond of the work of Jamie Smart, who’s enormous splash pages for the Where’s the Doctor feature have kept me in stunned laughter every week.
So here we are. The Monsters team and I have nearly finished the project, but are only half way through print publication, so they’ll keep going until Spring 2013. It’s my intention to put up several a week until I’ve caught up with the magazine, and then I’ll publish them alongside it. To keep things fresh between the fortnightly issues, I’ll also be putting up some personal bits. To get the real experience buy the magazine, and if you like trading cards then I hope you’ll grab some of the sets we’ve worked incredibly hard to make. They’re all copyrighted to the various people - BBC Magazines as was, Immediate Media Co. as is, and Doctor Who, so no thieving.
That’s all folks,
